If you recall, I finished part III with the notches completed in the rear posts. Well, I went and did some measurements and found that one notch was more than 1/8" higher than the other. Hmmm. I had my wife take a look and she noticed the difference. After a few days out of town, I came back and decided to glue in a plug in the lower notch and redo it so it will be even with the higher notch.
I had to hand plane the front stub a bit to adjust the stub's taper so the back of the arm would rise enough to fit the desired new notch location (see photo below). I assumed the tapers for both front stubs to be the same - but they were not. A very slight difference was enough to make a big impact in the rear elevation of the arm.
I raised the lower notch because disguising a seam across the grain is very difficult. However, this seam will be pretty much hidden by the arm above it. The only ones who should notice the seam (besides myself) will be babies and drunks.
What was the saying? Oh yes, measure twice, cut once. One of these days I will remember.
